If you like the colors of fine wine you’ll love love Summer Wine, an improved Physocaprus, commonly known as Ninebark. A super-tough, easy-care and fast-growing cross hybrid of our native species, Summer Wine features a mounding shrub to around 6 feet tall and wide with arching, cascading branches clothed in maple-like wine-purple leaves that turn to wine-red in fall. In late spring to early summer abundant domed clusters of contrasting pink-tinted white flowers appear that are followed by inflated burgundy-red seed heads. Layers of peeling red-brown bark on the branches and stems, hence the name “ninebark,” take the stage during the winter months. A trouble-free and colorful beauty that deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow. USDA Zones 3a-7b. Cold hardy to -40F!
