Description
An easy-to-grow and vigorous North American native, Dryopteris complexa ‘Robust’, commonly called Robust Male Fern, is an elegant beauty with large upright arching fronds that quickly form a quite impressive clump 3 to 4 feet tall and wide. The deeply divided lacy fronds emerge light green maturing to a handsome deep green, having a somewhat wavy appearance. This one will thrive in those heavily shaded areas of the garden where not many other plants will thrive. An excellent and reliable long-lived fern for the shade or woodland garden that combines beautifully as a background to hosta lilies, heuchera and many other shade loving perennial plants. The Robust Male Fern is semi-evergreen in warmer climates and quite drought tolerant when established, though prefers a consistently moist but well-drained soil.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing u3 to 4 feet tall and wide, and up to 5 feet tall in ideal conditions, the Robust Male Fern is ideal for use as an accent in heavily shaded to partially shaded smaller garden spaces or in groupings or mass plantings in larger shade or woodland garden spaces. Also a nice accent in home foundation plantings or large container gardens. A fine addition to woodland gardens, native gardens, streambank gardens and rain gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Robust Male Fern is easy to grow in a variety of moist but well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. It prefers a consistently moist soil rich in organic matter however will tolerate short dry periods when established.
