Description
If you’re looking for something completely unique, meet the Rattlesnake Master, Eryngium yuccifolium, a very easy-to-grow native perennial with some very unusual but attractive characteristics. We’re not exactly sure how the plant got its common name? Some say the name comes from the fact that some Native Americans used its root as an antidote for rattlesnake venom. Others say the forked flower stems could be used to pin down a rattlesnakes head. But if you look at a closeup of the flower the florets resemble a rattlesnake head with forked tongue protruding. Either way, this plant was appropriately named!
The Rattlesnake Master plant starts the growing season as an upright clump of attractive, sword shaped bluish leaves. In summer, branched stems rise above the foliage featuring globe-shaped flower clusters packed with small creamy white florets the butterflies and other beneficial pollinators will appreciate. Spent flowers can be left on the plant providing winter interest in the garden. Very easy to grow in a sunny site with well-drained to dry soil, Rattlesnake Master is a striking architectural plant that is sure to stand out in the garden!
Though attractive to a variety of pollinators, you might be happy to know that deer and rabbits turn their nose up to this one.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 5 feet tall and 1 to 3 feet wide, the Rattlesnake Master is ideal for use as a specimen in small spaces or in groupings or mass plantings in sunny to partly shaded larger perennial or wildflower borders. Looks very nice around garden ponds or in rock gardens near boulders and also makes a nice solo or accent plant in containers. A fine addition to native gardens, perennial gardens, rock gardens, pollinator gardens, meadow gardens, and white theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 4 feet or more apart for space between plants
