Description
If you love the color pink you’ll get plenty of it with this strong performing new Smooth Hydrangea that can handle the cold to -30F° and the heat to USDA Zone 9. ‘Pinkerella’ is a North American native Hydrangea featuring abundant big and full clusters of pink flowers in summer that stay pink all the way through fall and even after cutting for dried flowers! This means there’s no need for deadheading spent flowers, unless of course you want to cut some for fresh or dried floral arrangements. Though large, the flower clusters are perched atop very sturdy stems that won’t flop.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing naturally in a rounded mound to around 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, the Pinkerella Hydrangea is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or as a solo or combined with other plants in container gardens. In larger spaces it is stunning in groupings or as a low hedge in partially shaded landscape borders. Also an excellent colorful accent in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, cut flower gardens, pink theme gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 4 feet apart for solid hedges;Â 7 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Pinkerella Hydrangea is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil with average fertility, including clay-based soils, and full sun to part shade in northern zones and part shade (morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun) in southern zones. That said, in full sun the soil will need to remain moist throughout the growing and flowering seasons. For best flowering, we suggest 4 hours of direct sun light per day that comes in the morning and/or evening.Â
Pruning Tips
Hydrangea arborescens, commonly called smooth hydrangeas, can be left unpruned indefinitely. They bloom on new wood (current seasons growth), so avoid pruning them when they are preparing to bloom in summer as this will effect flowering. Any pruning is merely done to limit size or for aesthetic shaping by removing stray, broken, dead or crossing branches. Pruning is best done in summer or early fall after the plant has finished blooming, or in late winter before new growth begins to emerge.
