Descriptions
A new and more adaptive hybrid Illicium cross between I. floridanum and I. mexicanum, the Orion Star Flower Anise certainly breaks the mold with a low and mounding habit to only 3 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide and continuous flowering throughout the summer and fall, making it a perfect choice for home foundation plantings and landscape borders. Its abundant 2 to 3 inch star-shaped flowers with green eyes shine like stars against the backdrop of evergreen deep blue-green leaves that have a wonderful anise scent. That said, in full sun the leaves will be more of an olive green color, but still handsome. Extremely adaptable, this hybrid will thrive in moist or dry shade and full sun or shade! What’s more, the deer, rabbits and most other pests turn their nose up to it.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an upright habit and rounded form to 3 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, Orion Star Flower Anise is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a low evergreen hedge in home foundation plantings and sunny or shady woodland borders. Perfect for planting under large trees. An excellent home foundation plant. A fine addition to woodland gardens, white them gardens, fragrance gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 4 feet apart for solid hedges;Â 7 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Orion Star Flower Anise is very easy to grow in organically rich, moist but well-drained soils of average fertility in full sun to part shade. For best appearance and performance we recommend some shade in the afternoon. Tolerates dry soil when established. No pruning necessary. That said, a stray branch or stem can be pruned for shaping purposes.
