Description
One of the most attractive of the sedges, Carex vulpinoidea, commonly called the Fox Sedge, is a remarkable wetland plant that forms attractive mounds of narrow, grass-like foliage from which rises flower stems that that spray out from the center of the plant like a fountain and are topped with spiky seedheads that resemble a fox’s tail, hence the name. Thriving is sunny and moist to wet sites such as garden ponds, marshes, meadows, pond and lake shores stream sides, wet ditches and container water gardens.
Wildlife Assets
A wildlife superstar, Fox Sedge supports rails, grouse, ducks, and even song birds and several sparrows, snow buntings, cardinals, and redpolls use its flowers. Moose, beaver, deer and muskrat enjoy it as a food source. It also provides habitat and cover for wildlife and is a host plant for several Skipper butterflies.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a clump with flowers rising to 36 inches tall and equally as wide, the Fox Sedge is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and container or in groupings or mass plantings near or in the shallows around ponds, lakes, slow moving streams and other bodies of water. Excellent for beautifying those otherwise ugly roadside ditches. Also very nice in containers that can be situated in the margins of the garden pond. A fine addition to wetland gardens, ornamental grass gardens, bird gardens, butterfly gardens and rain gardens.
Growing Preferences
Fox Sedge is easy to grow in most any moist to wet soil in full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best performance. Will grow in the shallow water around ponds, lakes, slow moving streams and other bodies of water.
