Description
Hailing from France where it has been popular since the late 1800s, and rated by many collectors as the most free flowering Clematis of all hybrids, when grown along a fence or wall ‘Etoile Violette’ shows off a stunning profusion of beautiful and velvety deep purple flowers in late spring to early summer reblooming in late summer to early fall. While a great choice for covering large fences, trellises and pergolas, it also makes an exceptional ground cover. Just plant it in the middle of your perennial bed or flowering shrub border and let it ramble through!Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Climbing 8 to 12 feet high and spreading 3 to 6 feet wide, the Etoile Violette Clematis is ideal for growing on arbors, arches, pergolas, fences, trellises, obelisks, poles, lamp posts and other structures. Also is excellent as groundcover that will ramble through perennial and shrub borders. Combines beautifully with pink, light blue or yellow flowering clematis and other plants. A fine addition to Clematis gardens, purple theme gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 4 to 5 feet apart to cover fences, trellises, and walls
Growing Preferences
This Clematis is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Though it tolerates dry periods when established, it will appreciate an occasional watering in prolonged periods of dry weather. Make sure not to plant this one too deep as it tends to smother the plant. See pruning instructions just below.
Clematis Pruning Group 3
Clematis in group 3 consist of late-flowering species that bloom from mid-summer into fall. This group flowers on the last 2 to 3 feet of the current season’s growth (new wood). They are easy to prune because you do not need to maintain any old wood. In February or March, cut each stem to a height of 1 or 2 feet. Although you will be removing good stems and buds, this treatment keeps these vigorous growers in bounds. If not pruned, these vines will quickly become a mass of old diseased woody stems producing very few flowers. Always make sure to leave two good buds below where you make your cut. New growth will emerge from these buds to produce the current seasons vines and blooms.

This plant arrived in excellent condition. I was happily surprised at how large it was. It transplanted well and already (two weeks later) has several flowers.—————————————————–Thanks for the kind words and wonderful review! I ordered two of these clematis because I wanted the specific variety and none of my local greenhouses were going to carry it and most other online sources were already sold out in MARCH!. I found it here and was delighted to find it in gal pots, meaning it would not be a tiny foot tall baby plant but a full grown adult – or at least a teenager! The only thing I did not care for was how FedEx (or was it UPS??) treated it – the long box was almost completely flattened in the middle. but due to the masterful packing by Wilson Bros, there was NO damage to the two plants. These are larger with more growth on them than the clematis I have bought locally. I bought these to grow on 7 ft wooden obelisk combined with Tess of the d’Urbervilles climbing roses. For future purchases I will not hesitate to buy from Wilson Bros again. Initially I had cringed just a little at the price but oh my God they were sooooo worth every penny – tremendous healthy growth in perfect condition. I can’t wait to see how they do this summer. The care they were given before they shipped I am sure will give them a great start.——————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come!
