Description
A variegated selection of the ever-popular and award winning ‘Karl Foerster’ Feather Reed Grass, ‘Avalanche’ shares many of the same characteristics as its parent but has attractive variegated green leaves with a creamy white stripe down the center. The foliage forms a neat arching clump in the garden to about 2 feet high and wide. In late spring to early summer tall stems to 5 feet high tower above the foliage bearing silvery pinkish-purple flower plumes that mature to the typical golden-tan color by late summer persisting through fall and winter. The flowers are perfect for cutting and use as accents or a center piece in dried floral arrangements. An excellent vertical and soft textured accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings in landscape borders.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 feet in height in flower with a spread of up to 2 feet or so, Avalanche Feather Reed Grass is ideal for use as a vertical accent in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings or in groupings in larger landscape spaces. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, white theme gardens, Asian gardens and bird and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 24 inches apart for hedge or mass plantings; 6 feet or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences
Avalanche Feather Reed Grass is easy to grow when planted right, and in the right spot. It adapts to most soil types, even well draining clay, preferring a consistently moist, fertile soil. It performs best in full to mostly sun but will tolerate some shade, actually preferring some afternoon shade or filtered sun in hot climates. It is one of the earliest of ornamental grasses to start growing in spring. That means you want to make sure and trim it back to the ground in late winter, before new growth begins to emerge. Avoid fertilizing in the heat of summer.
